Equipment

  • 5 quart slow cooker

Ingredients

  • 5 cups apple cider
  • 1 bottle of red wine
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 cloves
  • 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1 orange
  • 1 apple sliced or diced (optional)
  • 1/2 cup spiced rum

Instructions

Slow Cooker Instructions

  • Add apple cider, wine, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg and cloves to slow cooker.
  • Peel a clean, washed orange and throw the orange peel in the slow cooker. Cut the peeled orange in half and squeeze the juice into the liquids in the slow cooker.
  • Put the lid on and turn to "high" for an hour.
  • Reduce the temperature to either "low" or "keep warm", add rum and diced apple, if desired. It can sit with the lid on or off for hours or serve after the rum and apples have been added.

Stove Instructions

  • To make this recipe on the stove instead of a slow cooker, add everything but the rum to a large sauce pan or Dutch oven, bring to a boil.  Simmer for about 30 minutes, then add the rum.  Serve in mugs and garnish with apple slices and/or cinnamon sticks.
