Harissa Garlic Hummus

Spicy harissa, zesty garlic, and fresh scallions combined with chickpeas create Harissa Garlic Hummus, a mouthwatering dip for pita chips or veggies, or a vibrant spread for sandwiches or wraps.

I’m sure you know by now how much my family and I adore spicy food.

Regular hummus isn’t going to fly in this house, so I’m either making Spicy Chipotle Hummus, which gets its heat from chipotles in adobo sauce, or my husband’s other favorite, Harissa Garlic Hummus, which gets its heat from harissa.

What is harissa?

Harissa is a piquant paste that is made of hot red peppers, garlic, spices, and olive oil.  It’s basically a super flavorful, spicy condiment for meat, vegetables, or rice that is common in Northern Africa.

After trying several different jars of harissa, I’ve noticed that its spiciness varies greatly from one brand to another.

My all-time favorite harissa is the garlicky, super spicy Traditional Tunisian Harissa from Trader Joe’s.  I mentioned it in my post “My 10 Favorite Products at Trader Joe’s.”

Ingredients needed to make this recipe (scroll down to recipe card for complete recipe)

  • Canned chickpeas
  • Harissa (I highly recommend Trader Joe’s harissa)
  • Fresh garlic
  • Scallions
  • Tahini
  • Olive oil
  • Salt
  • Water

My youngest son, the chile head, adds jalapeno to his tuna sandwiches, Habanero Garlic Pickles to his burgers, and….let’s not even bring up the egg-to-hot sauce ratio at breakfast.

If not because it’s extremely tasty, one of the great things about having some Harissa Garlic Hummus in the fridge is that my son, who’s not too keen on veggies, will dip raw carrots and sweet mini peppers in this hummus.

In case you missed that, my son will eat two types of RAW VEGETABLES if I make this.  #winning

How to serve this spicy hummus?

Creamy, spicy, and irresistible, you’ll want to add this hummus to everything.

Besides being a fabulous dip for veggies and pita chips, Harissa Garlic Hummus is also great slathered on Healthy Mediterranean Hummus Veggie Wraps (shown below).

We also serve it with our “Mediterranean Night”, where we serve a hodgepodge of grilled chicken, a big green salad tossed in a homemade vinaigrette, toasted pita bread, and some hummus.

How long is homemade hummus good for?

Homemade hummus can be kept in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for 4-6 days.

NOTES:

  • Not only is hummus vegan, it’s filled with fiber and plant-based protein from the chickpeas.
  • Make some hummus and serve it in a Middle Eastern Bowl.
  • Make sure you stir the jar of tahini very well.  The oil separates from the sesame paste, and it needs to be combined before measuring.
